2025 NFL Combine: 7 Linebacker Standouts Shine Bright

The 2025 NFL Combine kicked off with a bang as the interior defensive linemen took the stage, followed by edge rushers, and finally, the linebackers wrapped up the day with some jaw-dropping performances. While not all of the 10 linebackers we highlighted for Detroit Lions fans participated, seven of them truly stood out, showcasing their skills and potential on the field.

Jihaad Campbell: The Big Winner

Jihaad Campbell from Alabama, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 235 pounds, emerged as the big winner among the linebacker group. His impressive 4.52-second 40-yard dash and 10-foot-7 broad jump set him apart from his peers. On the field, Campbell’s balance and technique were impeccable, seamlessly navigating through drills. His acceleration was nothing short of remarkable, demonstrating complete control over his movements. Campbell’s pass rushing background shone through in EDGE drills, where his power and hand placement easily distinguished him from the competition.

Demetrius Knight Jr.: Speed and Effort

Demetrius Knight Jr. from South Carolina, at 6-foot-1 1⁄2 and 235 pounds, clocked a 4.58-second 40-yard dash. His speed was evident in on-field drills, covering vast distances laterally and accelerating when closing in on targets. Although his movements weren’t always natural, Knight Jr.’s effort was undeniable as he pushed himself to the limit in every drill.

Chris Paul Jr.: Compact and Controlled

Chris Paul Jr. from Mississippi, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 222 pounds, ran a 4.63-second 40-yard dash, which is right on the median for linebacker times. His compact movements allowed him to maintain control, and his acceleration showcased his ability to play faster than his straight-line speed. Paul Jr.’s lateral movement was particularly impressive and is expected to translate well at the next level.

Smael Mondon Jr.: Explosive and Balanced

Smael Mondon Jr. from Georgia, at 6-foot-2 and 224 pounds, ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and stunned with a 10-foot-10 broad jump, highlighting his explosive traits. His balance was a recurring theme in my notes, evident in every drill he participated in. Mondon Jr. smoothly transitioned between skills, displaying excellent lateral agility and attacking speed.

Kobe King: Quick and Tenacious

Kobe King from Penn State, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 236 pounds, may not have been on the pre-Combine watchlist, but his workout explained why the Lions brought him in for a formal meeting. His lateral movements in space were exceptional, with quick feet enabling immediate changes in direction. King’s speed and ability to vary his pace were impressive, though he occasionally throttled down more than necessary in certain drills. His tenacious approach and footwork painted a positive picture of his potential.

Collin Oliver: Athleticism and Potential

Collin Oliver from Oklahoma State, at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash, achieving a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-6 broad jump. As an experienced pass rushing linebacker, his ability to maintain speed while bending low was notable, but his hand usage left room for improvement. While Oliver’s movements resembled those of an off-the-ball linebacker, his athleticism and potential to develop in both roles were evident.

Kain Medrano: Speed and Special Teams Promise

Kain Medrano from UCLA, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 222 pounds, entered the Combine without much hype but quickly made his mark. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash of the day at 4.46 seconds, showcasing his incredible speed and potential. Medrano’s transitions were smooth, and his movements were effortless, maintaining his pace throughout the workout. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah repeatedly highlighted Medrano’s promise on special teams, and combined with his workout and measurables, he could hear his name called during the draft.
